Due Mari: Supporting the Cycle Route

Hotel Residence Ristorante Due Mari is situated along the picturesque route of the Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria. On this cycling route, Tiriolo is the destination for those starting from Villaggio Mancuso and the starting point for those heading towards Girifalco.

Villaggio Mancuso-Tiriolo

Starting from Villaggio Mancuso, the cycling route initially winds through a pleasant descent among larch pines. After a short uphill stretch, the road quickly descends until it reaches the outskirts of Albi, where the landscape opens up to cultivated hills dotted with olive trees, with the Ionian Sea visible in the distance.

Continuing, the route tackles several downhill hairpin bends before climbing towards the historic center of Taverna, situated at an altitude of 521 meters. This town is known for its rich history and as the birthplace of Mattia Preti, one of the most illustrious painters of the seventeenth century, whose works adorn the local churches and the Civic Museum.
The cycle route continues to climb towards Sorbo San Basile, at an altitude of 620 meters, a picturesque village, before ascending to Maranise and skirting the town of Fossato Serralta, situated at 720 meters. The route reaches its highest point at the pass near Casa Cantoniera Cafarda, at 890 meters, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.
From this point, the route gradually descends to Gimigliano, located at 525 meters, crossing gentle ups and downs. After crossing the viaduct over the Corace River, the cycle route begins to climb again towards Tiriolo, known as the “town of the two seas.” From Tiriolo, on clear days, it is possible to see the Aeolian Islands. The historic center of Tiriolo is renowned for its museums and charming artisan shops.

Tiriolo-Girifalco

The route begins in Tiriolo with a long descent that traverses hilly landscapes characterized by chestnut, oak, and olive trees, accompanied by eucalyptus and prickly pear plants. At kilometer 6.4, the town of Settingiano is reached (at an altitude of 170 meters), and the descent continues towards the Gola and Sella di Marcellinara, the narrowest point of the Italian peninsula, where the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas are separated by only 30 kilometers.
From this point, the cycle route heads towards Sarrottino and Martelletto, before tackling a challenging and sunny climb to Caraffa di Catanzaro (358 meters above sea level), with gradients reaching 11% and offering wide views of the Corace Valley.

Arriving at Caraffa at kilometer 19.8, a town of Arbëreshë origin founded in the 15th century, the cycle route continues with a slight descent towards Girifalco, passing through an area rich in farms and cultivated fields.
At kilometer 27.7, the route starts to climb again with gradients up to 8%, passing through olive groves that lead to Girifalco (at an altitude of 446 meters), reached shortly after at kilometer 31. This town, located on the slopes of Monte Covello and at the gateway to the Serre Park, has medieval origins and is home to the famous “Devil’s Fountain.”
